Father Lawrence Fares Celebrates 70 Years in the Priesthood

Father LawrenceFather Lawrence ordinationOn April 23, 2020, Father Lawrence, who resides in our parish, celebrated 70 years in the priesthood in a private mass with Father Jerry.  He will also be celebrating his 96th birthday on May 2nd.  You are probably all familiar with Father Lawrence, who has been concelebrating the 11 o'clock mass with Father Jerry for several months.

Rev Lawrence T. Fares was born in Kobayath, Akkar, North Lebanon in 1924 and was educated at the Carmelite Schools and later joined the Order.  He was ordained a Priest on April 23, 1950.

He served as an administrator of the Carmelite elementary and high schools in Lebanon.  He was Superintendent of Catholic Schools to the Lebanese Ministry of Education

As an Apostolic Missionary he traveled extensively throughout all of Asia Minor, the Persian Gulf, Arabia, and other places in the Middle and Far East tirelessly doing God’s work.  In Kuwait, he built Holy Family Cathedral and served as its first rector.

He eventually migrated to Australia, teaching at the University of Sydney.  He came to the US in 1969 and served for many years in the Archdiocese of Detroit. 

As an Author, he has published books in both Arabic and English, including "Mary of the Koran", which was said to be "the best study ever published to date on an approach between Christianity and Islam."  His most recent work is  “Kernel - Autobiography of a Grain of Wheat."
